Grey blending – what is it, why do you need it and what should you discuss with your hairdresser?

So, I have a gorgeous natural sprinkle of sparkle (aka grey hair) through my hair but it’s pretty hard to spot because I consult with my hairdresser at EVERY visit! These pictures are the day of my hair appointment before and after.

I tell them what I’m loving what I’m hating and we adapt my service to fit. As the years have gone by and the more sparkle that has arrived the more we adapt.

So, dependant on how many greys you have, the tone of the grey (because guess what – I’m not actually grey I’m WHITE), the position of the greys etc, you will need something different to another person.

Here are some ideas to talk through with your hairdresser at your next visit;

  1. If you’re dark – you can obviously just cover these regularly but you will always have a regrowth band. As this becomes more noticeable sooner you can discuss just having hairline and partline done every 2ndvisit. Or discuss a demi-permanent colour that doesn’t give a solid coverage and gives a softer wash out. This can take away the harshness of the grow-out.
  2. Balayage – if you don’t have many greys a good scattering of highlights or a balayage should be ideal.
  3. Blonde/highlights – try alternating visits of more foils (full or half head) with the next visit being face framing and maybe targeted at areas away from the grey as the grey will look naturally blended anyway.
  4. Liquid demi – blend the greys with a liquid demi-permanent/gloss tone. These don’t cover greys completely they BLEND the greys for what we call a partially translucent result. The beauty of a liquid demi is they give a beautiful soft wash out that doesn’t interfere with your highlights at the next visit.
  5. Root stretch – this again uses a liquid demi to cover the greys but can help you keep depth with lighter ends and add in low lights if you don’t like to be too blonde.
  6. Choice of toner – dependant on the shade of your greys you might need to customise your toner a little more. If you’re quite grey an ashy toner will be best, if you’re more white a violet toner may be better suited.
  7. More frequent visits – when blending grey smaller services more frequently is way better than big services with large amounts of time in between.
  8. Home maintenance – using a violet shampoo at home can help maintain the tone of your grey so consider adding a Blondes & All Shampoo to your hair care routine.
